Mali secured a significant win over the three-time African champions, and 2023 AFCON finalist – their first victory against Nigeria in 49 years.
The game saw goals from El Bilal Toure and Kamory Doumbia, scoring in each half of the match.
Toure capitalized on a defensive error by Chidozie Awaziem to score within 18 minutes of kickoff, putting Mali in the lead early on.
Doumbia then sealed the victory for Mali with a spectacular goal just three minutes before the end of the second half, leaving Nigeria struggling to recover.
The defeat dealt a blow to Nigeria’s performance in the March international window, as they had previously secured a victory against Ghana.
For interim coach Finidi George, the loss dims his chances of securing the role on a permanent basis.
