Stunning news about Andy Reid's future as Chiefs prepare for freezing playoff game against Bills

It has already been a huge offseason of news for NFL coaches, with everyone from Bill Belichick to Mike Vrabel losing jobs, while the Cowboys stunned fans by keeping Mike McCarthy as Dallas’ head coach.

But the biggest news could still be to come.

There’s a legitimate chance that the reigning Super Bowl champions could soon be searching for a new head coach.

According to Pro Football Talk, Andy Reid could retire after the Chiefs’ season ends.

“I think there’s reason to believe the Chiefs have the possibility on their radar screen,” PFT’s Mike Florio told CBS Sports Radio. “We’ll find out when the season ends. A lot of times, a guy keeps his mouth shut until it’s all said and done.”

That was the case with Mike Tomlin, who stormed away from a postgame press conference after being asked about his future with Pittsburgh, then changed his tune and stated that he wanted to remain with the Steelers.

With Jim Harbaugh still available after winning an NCAA championship at Michigan and Belichick set to interview a second time with the Atlanta Falcons, the NFL coaching market is hot and only getting hotter.

Reid leaving Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the reigning Super Bowl champs would be stunning.

But the Kansas City coach is 65 and there were hints last season that Reid could step away from the Chiefs.

Eric Bieniemy would have been a potential in-house candidate to replace Reid if he departed, but Bieniemy joined the Washington Commanders before the 2023 season as their offensive coordinator.

Reid has a loaded staff with the Chiefs, highlighted by former NFL head coaches Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo.

Mahomes is in the prime of his career while Kelce is on a Hall of Fame path, so if Reid leaves, anyone filling his huge shoes would be taking over one of the most talented teams in the NFL.

But burnout is high among pro coaches and at some point Reid — who spent 11 seasons with Philadelphia and took the Eagles to the Super Bowl — will realize that his time away from the stadium is more precious than his time on the field.

Reid is 258-144-1 in 25 seasons with two world championships and four Super Bowl appearances.

Kansas City will attempt to keep its season alive on Sunday with a tough AFC Divisional Round road game against the rival Buffalo Bills.

If the Chiefs lose, all eyes will immediately turn to Reid and his future in Kansas City.
