Andy Reid signs key defensive player in major boost to Chiefs' Super Bowl three-peat aspirations - and Travis Kelce is loving it

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t resting on their laurels.

Andy Reid’s team won their third Super Bowl of his tenure in last month’s Big Game, defeating the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22.

Next season, the Chiefs can win an unprecedented three-peat (three consecutive Super Bowl titles), and they’ve just taken a major step towards doing so.

According to reports, linebacker Drue Tranquill is re-signing with the Chiefs on a three-year, $19 million deal with $13 million guaranteed.

28-year-old Tranquill was a fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame in 2019.

He spent his first four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Tranquill signed with the Chiefs last offseason as an unrestricted free agent and quickly drew praise for his versatility.

He filled in for injured starting middle linebacker Nick Bolton and played a pivotal role in a Chiefs’ defense that often carried the team through games.

In 16 regular season games, Tranquill totaled 78 tackles with 4.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.

The LB then went on to post 21 tackles in the Chiefs’ four postseason contests and was a major factor in the team winning their second-straight Super Bowl.

The linebacker posted the news that he was staying in Kansas City with image of him and Travis Kelce that read: “Unfinished business”.

The Chiefs tight end retweeted the image saying: “LFG!” (let’s f***ing go).

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid asked by a German reporter on conspiracy theories that Taylor Swift’s ties to the team will help Joe Biden get re-elected as President

Tranquill was viewed as one of the better free agents on the market and the Chiefs locking him up can only be a good thing for their defensive unit.

He’ll likely start the season next to Bolton while fellow linebacker Wilie Gay Jr, who is also set for unrestricted free agency next week, will probably sign elsewhere.

The Chiefs will now try to tie down fellow defensive stalwarts Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed before making a run at their third straight Lombardi Trophy.
