A devastating motor accident along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road in Enugu state has left six travellers dead and two others critically injured on Tuesday, April 30.

The fatal accident, which occurred at Ekwegbe, resulted in the loss of fourteen males and two females, all of whom were burned beyond recognition. The victims were passengers aboard an 18-seater white Toyota Hummer bus bearing a Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA, with the inscription “Masha Allah.”

Reports indicate that the bus, allegedly driven at high speed, lost control and crashed into the fence of Maduka University along the road before bursting into flames. Despite swift responses from police officers, soldiers, and citizens, sixteen individuals perished in the inferno while two survivors were rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

Preliminary investigations by the police have revealed that the ill-fated vehicle, laden with edible vegetables, other food items, and passengers’ belongings, was en route from Enugu towards Nsukka. However, details regarding the vehicle’s origin and final destination remain unclear.

Authorities from the Igbo-Etiti Police Division have recovered the scattered items from the accident site, while Commissioner of Police CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, accompanied by officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps, visited the scene to assess the situation. Expressing sorrow over the tragic incident, Uzuegbu extended condolences to the families, friends, and associates of the deceased.
