Liverpool, chasing a treble in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield, had plenty of momentum ahead of their trip to Old Trafford last weekend, knowing a victory would take them above title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.

But the Reds had to settle for a point against a struggling United side and Redknapp believes that setback was still being felt during Thursday’s 3-0 Europa League defeat to Atalanta and Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace.

Both losses took place at Anfield and put a massive dent in Liverpool’s hopes of ending the season as Premier League champions and Europa League winners.

Asked to assess Liverpool’s title chances after the Crystal Palace defeat, Redknapp said on Sky Sports: ‘The damage was done at Man United last week.

‘You can see the affect it had in midweek and now today. They haven’t been able to take chances and put teams away.

‘They just didn’t look like scoring, it should have been 6-2 in the end. But they just haven’t got that belief right now. That’s how it can turn on you sometimes.

‘It feels like they could have been here until next week and still wouldn’t have scored. It just wasn’t there day and that’s football sometimes.

‘It can be a cruel game. But they missed so many chances. You’ve got to be clinical at this time of the season and they weren’t.’

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, described the performance against Palace as ‘poor’ but insisted they still created enough chances to clinch the three points.

‘They have been poor but at the same time they could have scored four,’ he said. ‘It all feels like it has just fallen apart for Liverpool in the last week.’

Liverpool were unable to break Palace’s resistance despite taking 21 shots and were condemned to just their third league defeat of the season after Eberechi Eze’s early goal.

The hard-fought win sees Crystal Palace climb to 14th in the Premier League, eight points above the relegation zone.
