Frank Warren insists Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk WILL definitely happen despite postponement

Frank Warren has insisted that Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk will definitely take place despite being postponed.

The duo were set to face off on February 17 for the undisputed heavyweight world titles, however that bout has now been postponed after Fury suffered a serious cut in sparring.

The gash required 15 stitches with the Gypsy King now set for a spell on the sidelines as he looks to recover.

Explaining the decision in Queensberry Promotion’s statement, Fury said: “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition.

“I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed.

“I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Fury’s promoter, Warren, appeared exclusively live on talkSPORT Drive with Andy Goldstein on Friday and explained the situation.

He said: “It’s the biggest blow to Tyson. He’s worked very hard and has been training very hard for this fight and has unfortunately sustained this terrible cut today.

“It’s off, it’s postponed and in due course I’m sure we’ll announce a new date for the fight.”

Explaining what happened, Warren explained: “It happened this morning in sparring with a Croatian heavyweight who caught his eye with his elbow.

“I can’t tell you how gutted everybody is and I obviously feel for Tyson, I feel for Usyk and I feel sorry for His Excellency Turki Alalshikh and everyone who works at the Riyadh Season because this is an event that we all worked hard to make happen and unfortunately it’s going to be postponed now.”

Asked if he believes the fight will still happen, Warren said: “Of course I do. It’s what everybody signed up for.

“It’s a huge fight – the biggest fight this century, there’s no doubt about that. It’s the fight that everybody wanted and because of the Riyadh Season, His Excellency and all his team, that’s why the fight is happening and nothing is going to impair it or stop it going on.

“It’s unfortunate where we are but we will make sure that it will occur because it’s the fight that everybody wants to see.”
