Boniface made his comeback during Bayer Leverkusen’s dominant 4-0 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf at the Bay Arena, securing their spot in the DFB Pokal final.
The Nigerian striker, who had been sidelined due to an abductor injury sustained while on pre-AFCON 2023 duty, made a significant impact during his 25-minute appearance.
Alonso, visibly pleased with Boniface’s return, expressed his delight during a post-match interview, emphasizing the importance of having the striker back in action, especially during such a crucial juncture of the season.
“It was special for Boniface after three months out. He worked hard to get back on the pitch. He wanted to enjoy it with the players. We needed him back,” Alonso said.
“I am happy and proud of the team. We showed a serious performance and controlled the game. We didn’t want any surprises. We can celebrate that we are heading back to Berlin after four years.
“It’s special to go to Berlin. We know the Pokal is important and we are expecting great support from our fans. We now have other targets. The last game of the season being a Final show we have had a good season.”
