Tension in Delta community as cleric kills sacred snake

A cleric has reportedly killed a sacred boa in Okeagbe community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. The cleric who is a member of God’s Grace Ministry, whose headquarters is in Warri, immediately fled the community before he was caught.

It was not clear why the cleric killed the boa at the time of this report.

Consequently, there was serious protests by indigenes of the Okeagbe community over the killing of the boa by the cleric.

Indigenes in their numbers chanted solidarity songs as they marched round the community.

They marched to the police station and an army formation in the community to register their grievances over what they termed as “sacrilege.”

The angry protesters did not allow the church to hold service on Monday as they insisted that the church and the cleric must perform the necessary rituals to cleanse the town as well as bury the snake like a human being.

The cleric who is an indigene of Orogun community in Ughelli North Local Government Area scaled the fence and fled the scene before the protesters arrived.

DAILY POST learnt that it is forbidden for anyone to kill a boa in Okeagbe community because the indigenes regard the snake as deity which the community worship.

The boa always enter the town during and after the Okeagbe community’s festival. It does not harm human beings including domestic animals like goat, dog and cat.

The indigenous people of Okeagbe community pray to the boa. They believe the snake supplies and provides food for them.
