Sports Minister Assesses Super Eagles’ World Cup Qualifiers and Coaching Situation

The Minister for Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh has acknowledged Nigeria’s shaky start to the World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign.

He expressed concern over the Country’s failure to qualify for the last World Cup and the subsequent negative impact it had on the football landscape, including the withdrawal of sponsors and decreased interest.

Despite the rocky beginning, Enoh remains hopeful that the team can regain control over the situation by winning games as soon as possible.

The Minister stressed the importance of making up for the team’s faulty start to ensure Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup.

On the issue of appointing a new head coach for the Super Eagles, Sen. Enoh disclosed that he has been consulted by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) in the recruitment process. He revealed that they are nearing the formal announcement of the new coach.

“I’m not a coach, We have more than 30+ sporting federations, and football is just one of them. As the Minister of Sports Development, it’s not my role to get involved in the day-to-day running of different sports. However, given my oversight of all these sports, I need to be consulted from time to time.”

“Some consultations have been ongoing with the Nigerian Football Federation, and I can tell you that we are nearing the formal announcement of a substantive national coach for the Super Eagles,” the Minister confirmed.

Former Nigeria international, Emmanuel Amuneke is believed to be the frontrunner for the Super Eagles job, however, there’s been no official confirmation.
