Samson Siasia Dismisses Super Eagles Return Rumors

Siasia clarified that he did not apply for the role due to his ongoing FIFA suspension, which is set to be lifted in August 2024.

In 2019, FIFA imposed a lifetime ban on Siasia from all football activities due to match-fixing allegations.

However, following an appeal, the ban was reduced to five years. Siasia emphasized that it would be illogical for him to apply for a coaching job while still under suspension.

Addressing the situation, Siasia stated, “I did not apply for Super Eagles coaching job because I know FIFA has yet to lift the suspension on me.

“I don’t know where those who reported that I applied got their story from. It’s common sense, I cannot be suspended and be applying for a job. I know I would not even be considered for it,” he told Complete Sports.

He expressed regret over his inability to pursue coaching opportunities until his ban is officially lifted, extending his best wishes to whoever assumes the role.

“The opportunity came too soon because I am still suspended until August 2024. If it had come after August this year, I would have been in contention to lead the Super Eagles. I feel bad, but I cannot help the situation I found myself in. I wish whoever gets the job best of luck.”

Despite being ineligible for the position, Siasia shared his perspective on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) hiring foreign coaches.

He argued against the practice, advocating for the promotion of qualified Nigerian coaches, both domestically and internationally.

Siasia emphasized the importance of investing in homegrown talent and learning from past experiences with foreign coaches.

“We should not waste our time and money hiring a foreign coach when we have qualified Nigerian coaches in the diaspora and domestic football scene,” Siasia asserted.

He cautioned against repeating past mistakes and urged the NFF to prioritize the development of the Super Eagles under Nigerian leadership.
