The Nigerian Medical Association Cross River State chapter has embarked on an indefinite strike following the kidnap of its member, Professor Ekanem Ephraim at about 7.30 pm on July 13 from her residence in Calabar by armed men pretending to be patients.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued after its emergency meeting on Sunday evening and signed by the NMA state Chairman, Dr. Felix Archibong and Secretary, Dr. Freeman Egbe.

The NMA noted that all efforts made to ensure the release of its member has been futile.

According to the association, “To embark on a total and indefinite withdrawal of medical services effective immediately in solidarity with our member still in the hands of her abductors.

“This withdrawal of medical service will involve all hospitals in the state both federal, state, private and Mission.

“The State government should activate all necessary instruments at its disposal to ensure the timely and unconditional release of our member in the hands of her abductors.”

The association noted that it is aware that withdrawal of services would bring about hardship on the citizens but appealed to the relevant security agencies to ensure a timely release of its abducted member.

is was not the first time the association would embark on a strike on account of the abduction of its member in Cross River.
