The Association of Resident Doctors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra has withdrawn its services over the murder of its member, Dr. Casmir Okpe.

The association made this known in a communique signed by its President, Dr. Ifeanyi Nwaeju, and General-Secretary, Dr. Gibson Chiejine, and made available to our correspondent on Friday.

The PUNCH HealthWise gathered that Dr. Okpe was shot and killed while on his way back from work on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.

The resident doctors said they resolved to withdraw their services for 48 hours, adding that doctors are no longer secured “having witnessed series of kidnappings and now gruesome murder of our colleague.”

It, however, exempts members that are on emergency duties.

The doctors withdrew their services from Thursday, October 13 to Friday, October 14, 2022.

The statement read in part “The Association of Resident Doctors, NAUTH Nnewi had an Emergency General Meeting, following the gruesome killing of one of her members, Dr. Casmir Okpe by yet-to-be identified gunmen.

“The meeting which had over 200 members present, made the following observations:

“That Dr. Casmir Ikechukwu Okpe was gruesomely murdered.

“That despite the appearance of improved security presence in the state, there seems to be a worsening state of insecurity in our environment.

“The safety of our members that are working in the permanent site, temporary site, and outstations, especially Oba outstation through the Nnewi – Oba new road axis are constantly under threat.

“The Congress commiserates with the family of the deceased and prayed that God should give them the needed strength in a time like this.

“The Congress urged the State Government and Security agencies to urgently bring the perpetrators of this dastardly act to justice.

“The Congress resolved to withdraw the services of its members for the next 48 hours except those on emergency duties.”
