Motorcyclists union sacks local chairman over alleged N1.1m fraud in Kogi

The Lokoja Local Government branch of the Kogi State Nigeria Motorcycle Transport Union has sacked its branch chairman, Alhaji Baba Musa Aliyu, over alleged N1.1 million fraud.

The union executives, in a meeting held in Lokoja, resolved to sack the chairman “to save the union’’ from further embarrassment.

The executives, who signed their resolutions, appointed Musa Sadiq Abubakar, the vice chairman of the union, to take over as acting chairman.

The sack of Aliyu was contained in a letter dated April 1, 2024, in which officials of the union passed a vote of no confidence in the embattled chairman.

The letter reads in part: “We, the under-listed names and signatories, have unanimously passed a vote of no confidence in your leadership as the Chairman, Nigeria Motorcycle Transport Union, Lokoja Local Government Branch, and you’re hereby impeached.

“Your impeachment is based on your ungodly and unconstitutional activities since you assumed office as the chairman. These include monopolisation of union positions, embezzlement of union funds, inability to take care of the welfare of members, and lack of accountability as the account of the union with our bank is dormant.

“The union hospital [service] has closed due to your inability to service them as members are no longer accepted for treatment. The recent one that is ungodly, scandalous, and barbaric is your refusal to deliver compensation money meant for one Lawali Nuhu, who was involved in an accident and died in Felele Lokoja. The state chairman of the union [had to] intervene by suspending you from office before the money was released to the family of the late Lawali Nuhu.

“It’s on the above issues and others too numerous to mention that you’re hereby impeached with immediate effect and your vice is hereby nominated to act as the acting chairman pending the resolution of the union.”
