MLS: Hugo Lloris leaves Tottenham for Los Angeles FC

An era at Tottenham is coming to an end with Hugo Lloris announcing his departure from the Premier League club after a stellar career in North London.

Before losing his place in the team in 2023, Lloris had been a focal point at Tottenham Hotspur. He was a solid goalkeeper during the early post-Harry Redknapp years and then a leading figure as Mauricio Pochettino dragged the team all the way to the Champions League final.

“After 11 years, 361 games and 127 clean sheets, Hugo Lloris is leaving the Premier League,” were the words written in the Premier League’s own statement on Twitter.

The former Spurs captain, relegated to third choice this season after the arrival of Guglielmo Vicario, is leaving for Major League Soccer.

Lloris, 37, has signed a one-year contract with Los Angeles FC with an option to extend for a further two years.

“Hugo is arguably the most successful goalkeeper of his generation and a great champion. We are incredibly excited that he has chosen LAFC for the next phase of his illustrious career,” boasted John Thorrington, co-chairman of the reigning MLS runners-up.

How will Spurs mark Lloris’ departure?

Tottenham, meanwhile, are preparing to send their captain off with great fanfare as they kickstart 2024.

“At half-time of the Bournemouth game we will all say thank you to Hugo Lloris together,” the club tweeted.

“From the first moment I felt proud and privileged to represent this club,” said Lloris.

One negative, however, is the fact that Lloris is left with the nagging disappointment of not having won any trophies with the North London club. He was on the losing side in two League Cup finals in 2015 and 2021, whilst he also lost the aforementioned Champions League final against Liverpool.
