Lionesses' new FIFA ranking revealed as Emma Hayes' future USWNT suffer shock drop

After six years in the fourth spot in the FIFA World Rankings, England’s Lionesses have finally seen the fruits of their labour.

Sarina Wiegman’s side have risen to their highest ever ranking thanks to some of their recent oustanding performances.

The Lionesses were most recently in action in two friendlies in Spain.

They registered two resounding victories – defeating Austria 7-2 and Italy 5-1.

While they did not top their group in the recent UEFA Nations League – which ultimately killed their hopes of competing at Paris 2024 – they did pick up some impressive results including a 6-0 win over Scotland.

England have never quite made it to the top of the FIFA Women’s World Rankings, nor have they made it the second place spot since 2018.

It is the World Champions and Nations League champions Spain who retain their spot at the top of the rankings, having taken the top spot four months ago.

But perhaps the biggest shock is for the US Women’s National Team who – having never slipped below third in the FIFA rankings – have now fallen to fourth spot.

The new rankings come just days after the USA clinched victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the final.

The USA are soon set to be taken over by current Chelsea boss Emma Hayes, who announced she would be leaving the Blues after 12 years in charge.

The task for Hayes will be to rebuild the USA into the dominant global force they used to be

But can she overcome a Spanish team who seem completely infallible?

It means that Hayes will take charge of a US Women’s Team who – on paper – in their long and decorated history have never been weaker.
