Lion Cub Rescued From Traffickers In Abuja

A lion cub has been rescued by the Nationwide Environmental Requirements and Rules Enforcement Company, NESREA, from wildlife traffickers on Thursday in Abuja.

The Nationwide Park Service mixed with a group from NESREA, and the Nigerian Police Drive, swung into motion, arresting the suspects who tried to unload the animal after getting a tip-off.

The suspects have been reportedly making an attempt to unload the animal for N6 million.

Talking on behalf of the Director-Normal of NESREA Aliyu Jauro, the Director of Environmental High quality Management, Mr. Ayuba Jacob stated the operation was carried out as a result of the animal was among the many endangered species listed within the extant wildlife legal guidelines together with Worldwide Conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory.

“Lions, like different endangered species are prohibited from unlawful possession and open sale each domestically and internationally below totally different conventions and rules. Nigeria is a signatory to the Conference on Worldwide Commerce in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),” he stated.

“We have now the Nationwide Environmental (Safety of Endangered Species in Worldwide Commerce) Regulation 2011 and the Endangered Species (Management of Worldwide Commerce and Site visitors) (Modification) Act, 2016.”
