Global Firepower Index: Nigerian Military No Longer the Most Powerful in Latest Africa Rankings
  • A new report has confirmed that Nigeria’s military might has depreciated according to the latest rankings released in 2023
  • The Global Firepower Index ranked Nigeria fourth in the list of African countries with powerful military might and 36th in the global index
  • North African giants, Egypt and Algeria, took first and second place on the log, while South Africa’s military was ranked third

Despite claiming to have attained victory over Boko Haram and banditry activities in the north, the Nigerian Armed Forces did not make the top three of the global firepower index ranking released recently.

As reported by the Nigerian Tribune, the Nigerian military could only manage fourth place, one step down from last year’s position in third place.

The rankings show that the Nigerian military is also 36th in the world, falling behind first-place holder Egypt – 14th in the world, and north African counterpart Algeria, which is second in Africa and 26th in the world. While Nigeria’s arch-rival, South Africa, placed third in Africa and 33rd in the world ranking.

Meanwhile, on the world stage, the United States retained its number one spot as the best in the world and was closely followed by Russia in second place, and the Asian giant China was ranked the third-best military in the world.

Elsewhere, another Asian powerhouse, India, was ranked fourth, while its colonial master, the United Kingdom (UK), was surprisingly ranked fifth.

Completing the top 10 list include South Korea, Pakistan, Japan, France and Italy, ranked sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively.

Giving the parameters the rankings were derived from, the report reads:

“Ranking the nations of the world based on currently available firepower. The finalised Global Firepower ranking below utilises over 60 individual factors to determine a given nation’s Power Index (‘PwrIndx’) score with categories, ranging from the number of military units and financial standing to logistical capabilities and geography.

“For 2023, Nigeria is ranked 36 of 145 out of the countries considered for the annual GFP review. The nation holds a PwrIndx score of 0.5587.”

Meanwhile, the list of the most powerful military might in Africa for 2023 has been released by the Global Firepower Index (GFI).

According to the rankings by GFI, North African giant Egypt topped the list for a second consecutive year.

Its Algerian neighbour comes second on the list, while South Africa wrapped up the top three list.

Similarly, the United States of America has retained its status as the most powerful country in the world.

According to the Global Firepower Index ranking released for 2023, the United States military was ranked number one.

The rankings placed Russia second on the list, China third, and India fourth.
