Gary Neville has revealed what he thinks Roy Keane would be worth in the current market.

Keane is widely-regarded as one of the best Premier League midfielders of all time as former captain of Manchester United and seven-time top flight champion.

Since he retired from football in 2006 while at Celtic, the Irishman went into coaching before taking up punditry and becoming one of Sky Sports’ front line pundits.

Football has changed dramatically since his playing days, with Keane once the centre of the biggest-ever British transfer when he joined United for £3.75million from Nottingham Forest in 1993.

Speaking on the latest Stick To Football Podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, Neville considered what his former team-mate would be worth in the current market.

‘What was Declan Rice? £100million?’ Neville asked. ‘You’d be worth £100million.’ 

Keane replied: ‘Yeah, I’d think so,’ before quickly moving away from the subject.

£3.65 in 1993 converted to today’s money is around £95m, meaning Neville wasn’t far off his prediction, though the transfer to United was before Keane’s widespread success and prime.

Rice joined Arsenal for £105m from West Ham in the summer. 

Keane, now 52, was reluctant to accept the praise from Neville, and later got one over on his fellow pundit when speaking about his early days at United.

Neville revealed he once had to watch Keane play right-back, the former England man’s position, when he first joined the team, and Keane explained why he was playing in defence rather than midfield, much to Neville’s expense.

‘Truthfully, one of the reasons I played right back was because I was due a hernia operation at the end of the season,’ he said. ‘He [Sir Alex Ferguson] said physically you’re struggling, so we’ll put you in at right back.

‘I couldn’t get away with it in the middle of the park, but I could cope with it [at right back].’
