In a bid to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s education sector, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out individuals in both public and private institutions who possess fake certificates.

The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, reiterated this resolve during a press briefing held on Friday, May 3, in Abuja, where he received the report of an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling.

The establishment of the committee, which was set up on January 9 by the Federal Government, aimed to investigate the prevalence of degree racketeering in both local and foreign private universities. The committee’s mandate included reviewing the involvement of government agencies or officials in facilitating the recognition or procurement of fake certificates.

Expressing dismay over the findings of the investigations, Mamman emphasized the ministry’s determination to collaborate with relevant agencies to cleanse the education sector of fraudulent practices.

“The integrity of our education system must not be compromised by a few individuals. It’s alarming that some individuals may be holding fake certificates within public and private organizations. This report underscores the urgent need for action,” Mamman remarked.

He further warned that any government official found complicit in such activities would face legal repercussions. Mamman highlighted instances where individuals were found to possess international certificates falsely claiming academic achievements not earned through legitimate means.

Promising decisive action, Mamman assured stakeholders that the Ministry of Education would implement stringent measures to uphold educational standards and restore trust in the system.
