Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has advised manager, Erik ten Hag to drop Fred and Scott McTominay.

According to him, Ten Hag should consider playing centre-back, Lisandro Martinez in midfield instead.

Martinez also struggled to handle Danny Welbeck as United lost 2-1 to Brighton in their Premier League opener on Sunday.

The Argentine was also fortunate not to concede a penalty when he barged Welbeck over inside the box.

United are trying to bolster their midfield having lost Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic over the summer.

When asked to name the starting XI he would pick for United’s next fixture away to Brentford on Saturday, Ferdinand said on his Vibe with Five YouTube show: “In my midfield, I’m going to play Martinez as the holding midfielder and take Fred out. I’m going to play Varane and Maguire [at centre-back].

“I wouldn’t pick McTominay or Fred. Listen, whatever happens, Man United will improve from the first day against Brighton. Things can only get better.”
