CAF Awards: Osimhen Praises Amuneke Despite Snubbing Him For Salah

Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has expressed gratitude to former coach Emmanuel Amuneke, after being crowned the best player in Africa at an awards ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.

Osimhen’s football journey began under Amuneke’s guidance, with a highlight being their victory in the 2005 FIFA U17 World Cup, where Osimhen not only secured the golden boot but also earned the title of CAF Young Player of the Year.

While Osimhen basked in the joy of his accomplishment, it’s noteworthy that Amuneke, his former trainer, controversially supported Mohamed Salah for the award this time.

This choice sparked outrage on social media, with Nigerians expressing criticism toward the Super Eagles legend for not backing Osimhen.

Despite the differing opinions, Osimhen’s joy was palpable as he thanked the former Barcelona winger for contributing to his development.

“It is a dream come true and I’ll like to thank, Mr Emmanuel Amuneke. Without him, I don’t think I’ll be standing here, holding one of the most prestigious football award in the world.

“Also, I have to thank everybody who has helped me on this journey and all Africans who have helped to put me on the map despite my faults.” He said.

Osimhen scored 26 Serie A goals last term to inspire Napoli to their first Scudetto win in 33 years.

The 24-year-old was named the Serie A Player of the Season and placed 8th in 2023 final Balon D’or rankings.
