Andy Murray writes six-word message to critics on TV camera after Miami Open comeback

Andy Murray insists there is ‘life in the old dog yet’ following his victory at the Miami Open.

The Scotsman took on Wimbledon 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the first round on Wednesday, fighting back to win 4-6 6-3 6-4.

The British no.4, now 36, has hinted at retirement this year, meaning this could be his final appearance at the Florida tournament.

He refused to let a below-par first set stop him from grabbing the match by the horns and sealing the win as Berrittini struggled with dizziness.

Grabbing a pen after the win, Murray wrote a message on a TV camera – just like Carlos Alcaraz did at Indian Wells earlier this month.

“Life in the old dog yet!” he wrote, along with a smiley face.

The two-time Miami champion has won just four times this calendar year – and faced some critics along the way.

In January, Murray reacted angrily to a BBC reporter’s post on X, formerly known as Twitter, which posed the question when the star should call time on his career.

The post from Kheredine Idessane linked to an article he had written which remarked that Murray risked damaging his legacy by carrying on his career.

Murray will face Argentine Tomas Etcheverry in the next round, the man who knocked him out of January’s Australian Open in a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 defeat.

Whenever Murray made an unforced error on the court on Thursday, he would look to his team and let out a laugh every time.

When asked about this on Sky Sports after the game, the Scot said: “You were saying that I need to be happier on court in the interview before the match.

Carlos Alcaraz writes cryptic ‘see you soon’ message on camera after win over Felix Auger Aliassime at Indian Wells Open

“If I’m laughing that’s not okay. If I’m shouting that’s not okay. If I’m flat, like I was in Australia, that’s not okay.

“It’s very hard for me to get the balance right. I’m very different on the tennis court. I’m not a robot. I’m a bit odd, a bit strange, but I play better when I am like that.”
