Player ratings as Daly winner books place in Women's FA Cup semi final

An extra-time goal from Rachel Daly earned Aston Villa a shock 2-1 win over Man City in the Women’s FA Cup quarter finals.

Man City had plenty of chances to win the game, but were made to pay for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.

The home side started well, causing Man City particular problems down the left-hand side. It was from said flank that Villa created the first real chance of the game, with Rachel Daly forcing Ellie Roebuck into a smart save after she was found by Kirsty Hanson with a pull back cross.

Daly would be denied by Roebuck once again 10 minutes later, seeing her audacious effort from fully-30 yards out be tipped just over the bar by the Man City number one,

From the resulting corner kick, the Villans would take a deserved lead through captain Rachel Corsie. The full-back stole in in front of Chloe Kelly at the back post to head goalward, and after a rather fortunate deflection, the ball flew past Roebuck and into the net.

That goal finally woke City up a bit, and moments after going behind they’d have their first real notable effort on goal through Deyna Castellanos. After some neat interplay with Kelly, the midfielder fired just over the top right corner of the net from the right of the penalty area.

Lauren Hemp would then force Hannah Hampton into her first save of the game, with the Villa goalkeeper brilliantly diving to her left to tip the Euros winner’s powerful header around the post.

Man City were finally able to grab an equaliser in the 38th minute thanks to Castellanos, with the Venezuelan heading home a Hemp cross from the left flank.

The visitors continued to cause Villa problems at the back at the start of the second half, with Shaw almost capitalising on some calamitous goalkeeping from Hampton to give her side the lead. After Hampton flapped at a cross, Shaw saw an effort on goal well cleared off the line by Corsie.

Shaw would come close once again in the 74th minute, heading a near post cross from Kelly narrowly wide of the post.

Five minutes later Kelly would miss a glorious chance for City. After storming into the penalty area with just the keeper to beat, the Euros winner side-footed agonisingly wide when she really, really should have scored.

In the final second of normal time, Danielle Turner should have won it for Villa. The defender was found completely unmarked with a header back across goal, but could only nod wide of the post.

Five minutes into extra time, Aston Villa re-took the lead through Daly. The England star was able to steal in to tap the ball home after Roebuck made a great save to deny Anna Patten.

City huffed and puffed thereafter, but didn’t really threaten again as Villa held on for a famous win.
