Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag has admitted that captain Harry Maguire may leave the club this summer if he is unsatisfied with a squad role next season.

According to Ten Hag, Maguire has to make the decision to either stay or leave Old Trafford this summer.

Maguire has slipped down the pecking order at Man United with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez the manager’s first-choice pairing at the back.

The England international is now effectively Man United’s fifth-choice option at the back, with Victor Lindelof preferred in Martinez’s absence since the Argentine’s season-ending injury with Luke Shaw also shifted inside this season.

Maguire has started just 16 games in all competitions this season for Man United and while Ten Hag admires his professionalism and status as club captain, he admitted no player would be happy in those current circumstances.

“Yes, but he [Harry Maguire] has high competition there with Raphael Varane [at centre back], who is fantastic. That describes everything,” Ten Hag told The Times.

“No one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well. He trains always on the best levels, so with 100 percent effort.

“So he handles that situation well and he is in that manner and in his captaincy, he is important for the squad.”

Asked if Maguire will stay or leave Man United, ten Hag added: “Let’s say I am happy he is here and when we needed him, he did his job. But it is also a decision he has to make.”

Maguire started Man United’s final Premier League game of the season against Fulham.

The former Leicester City defender is expected to return to the bench for Saturday’s FA Cup final showdown against Manchester City at Wembley.
