Arsenal previously played the MLS All-Stars back in 2016. The Gunners had just finished second in the Premier League and players like Petr Cech, Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott were in the starting XI.

Taking to the field for the MLS side were legends like Andrea Pirlo, Kaka, David Villa and Didier Drogba, but it was Joel Campbell who scored the game’s first goal as he struck from the penalty spot.

Former Chelsea striker Drogba equalised just before half time but Chuba Akpom ensured the north London side won by converting Nacho Monreal’s cross late on.

Someone who is particularly excited about the 2023 game is Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, the current coach of D.C United who will take charge of the MLS All-Stars roster for the game.

He said: “I’ve had a front-row seat to watch the growth and development of Major League Soccer, first as a player and now as a manager.

“The opportunity to lead the best our league has to offer against a top Premier League club like Arsenal will be a highlight for me personally and an unforgettable experience for our passionate fanbase here in DC.”

Rooney previously played against the MLS side with Man Utd in a 4-0 win in 2011 and later represented the American league in the 2019 game when he and the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Nani and Carlos Vela were beaten 3-0 by Atletico Madrid.
